Why Guilin is "The Most Scenic Under Heaven"
Chinese people say "Guilin's scenery is the best under heaven" (桂林山水甲天下). As a local, I can confirm: the karst peaks rising from the Li River are unlike anywhere else on Earth. This is the China you've seen on postcards and calendar photos.
The region has two main hubs: Guilin City (convenient transport, Elephant Trunk Hill) and Yangshuo (2 hours south, where the REAL scenery is). Most travelers use Guilin as an entry point, then spend 2–3 days in Yangshuo biking through rice paddies and karst peaks.
Don't skip Yangshuo! Guilin City is okay, but Yangshuo is magical. Also: April–May and September–October are the best months (clear skies, comfortable temps). Summer is hot/humid, winter is cold + foggy (you can't see the peaks).
Li River Cruise (漓江游船) — The #1 Experience 🚢
Why It's Unmissable
The 83km stretch from Guilin to Yangshuo is the most scenic river journey in China. You'll float past karst peaks, water buffalo, bamboo groves, and fishermen with cormorants. The views are on the ¥20 banknote (yes, really — take a photo with the bill!).

Local Tips for the Li River
- Sit on the RIGHT side of the boat (facing forward) for the best views.
- Bring sunscreen + hat — the deck is exposed (even in "winter").
- The buffet lunch is mediocre. Eat a big breakfast before boarding.
- Don't do the cruise in winter (Dec–Feb): Fog + low clouds = you can't see the peaks (wasted money).
Yangshuo (阳朔) — Bike Through Karst Peaks 🚲
What it is: A small town 2 hours south of Guilin, surrounded by dramatic karst peaks and rice paddies. This is where you want to spend 2–3 days — not in Guilin city.
Why it's special: Picture this: you're biking past water buffalo, through rice fields, with 200m-tall limestone peaks towering on both sides. That's Yangshuo. It's also famous for rock climbing (600+ routes), cooking classes, and "Impression Sanjie Liu" — a light show on the river directed by Zhang Yimou (same director as the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony).
Getting there: From Guilin, take a bus (¥25, 1.5 hrs) or Didi (¥120–150, 1.5 hrs). Many people arrive via Li River cruise (drops you at Yangshuo).

Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田) — Day Trip from Guilin 🌾
What it is: Massive rice terraces built 600+ years ago by Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities. The terraces cover the mountain slopes like giant green (or gold, in autumn) staircases.
Why it's special: The scale is jaw-dropping. You'll see local farmers working the terraces by hand (no machines). The villages are also home to ethnic minorities — you can visit their wooden stilt houses.
Best time to visit: April–May (water-filled terraces, mirror-like reflections) and September–October (golden ripe rice). Avoid winter (terraces are brown + foggy).
Getting there: 2.5-hour bus from Guilin (¥50). Stay overnight if you want to see sunrise (magical).
🌾 Jinkeng Dazhai (金坑大寨)
Vibe: More authentic, fewer tourists.
Best for: Serious hiking + photography.
Stay: Wooden guesthouses in the village (¥80–150/night).
🌾 Ping'an Village (平安村)
Vibe: More developed, easier to access.
Best for: First-time visitors, families.
Stay: Guesthouses with terrace views (¥120–250/night).
💰 Cost: ¥100 entry + ¥50 bus fare + ¥200 for a village guesthouse.

Guilin City Attractions (If You Have Time)
Quick Hits
- Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山): Guilin's symbol — a hill that looks like an elephant drinking from the river. ¥70. Skip if you're short on time.
- Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩): Colorful limestone cave with stalactites. ¥90. Touristy but impressive.
- Two Rivers & Four Lakes (两江四湖): Night boat cruise (¥185) or walk around the lakes. Pretty lights, romantic vibe.
- Folded Brocade Hill (叠彩山): Best city views from the top. ¥35. Good for sunrise if you're staying in Guilin city.
Most travelers make Guilin city their base and do day trips. I recommend the opposite: stay in Yangshuo (better scenery, more relaxed) and do Guilin as a day trip or just pass through. Yangshuo has better food, better vibes, and you're IN the scenery (not looking at it from a distance).
Food & Drink — Guilin Cuisine
Guilin's food is lighter than Sichuan but more flavorful than Cantonese. The star dish is Guilin Rice Noodles (桂林米粉) — eaten for breakfast, lunch, and midnight snacks.
